Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest way to order repeat prescriptions is:

  • using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)

This account shows you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

If you are unable to use the above preferred method:

  • bring the paper form to the surgery, Monday to Friday during opening hours

We do not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or email.

The Practice can accept repeat prescription requests from patients 2 weeks before you run out of your medicationnot earlier than 6 weeks after your previous issue.

If you are going on holiday or you have special circumstances why you may need your medication early, you can make a comment on your request and the Prescribing Team will take this into consideration.

The use of this email is only permitted to request medication for your child under the age of 16 and this medication is not on their repeat prescription outside of the eConsult hours (6.30am – 3.30pm) or sooner if capacity has been reached on the day.

Please include your full name, date of birth and the item(s) that you require. If any information is missing, we will not be able to process your request.

Any inappropriate requests will be rejected.

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • at your GP practice
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:

  • phone our prescribing clerks between 11.30am and 1pm on 01233 610140 and select option 3

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when you need to come in for a review.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.

Medication available without Prescription – Over the Counter (OTC)

There is a strict guidance from the Medicine Management Department regulating what GPs should and should not prescribe.

Medication available over the counter, without prescription should not be prescribed due to the high cost to the NHS.

Your Doctor might stop these medications on your repeat prescription and advise you to purchase them from your Pharmacist.

Why can’t I get a prescription for an over the counter medicine? – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD)

Electronic Repeat Dispensing means that your GP signs 6 or 12 months worth of prescriptions in one go and sends them off to the Pharmacy. You DO NOT need to request them either from your GP or your Pharmacist, just turn up to collect them when due.

Please see a demonstration on how the process works: https://youtu.be/L5yjUTM2FpQ

If you would like this Electronic Repeat Dispensing scheme to be set up, please contact the practice.

Please note that it is the responsibility of the pharmacist to let you know when your last prescription is dispensed so that you can request your next batch in good time.
